Rinpung Dzong
Overview
Rinpung Dzong dominates the Paro Valley as a premier example of Bhutanese architecture. Its massive white walls and red shikhara rise above the Paro Chhu, housing monastic and administrative centers. It remains a pinnacle of the 'dzong' system, where governance and spirituality coexist beneath one magnificent roof.
Story & Significance
Originating in the 15th century, this site carries a profound spiritual lineage. In 1646, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal consecrated the dzong to defend against northern threats. Every spring, the courtyard hosts the Paro Tshechu, where ancient sacred dances celebrate Buddhist victories.
