Tashichho Dzong
Overview
Commanding the northern edge of Thimphu Valley, Tashichho Dzong stands as a masterwork of Bhutanese craftsmanship and a focal point of the nation’s identity. This majestic fortress houses the King’s throne room and key government secretariats. Overlooking the river, its vast dimensions and manicured gardens present an aura of order and grandeur that defines the capital’s skyline.
Story & Significance
Founded in 1216 by Lama Gyalwa Lhanangpa, Tashichho Dzong was elevated by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1641. Completely renovated in the 1960s by the Third King without blueprints or nails, it stands as a feat of traditional engineering. As the summer residence of the central monastic body and the Je Khenpo, it symbolizes the vital union of spiritual and secular life in Bhutan.
