Overview

The Motithang Takin Preserve, hidden in a forest of blue pine on Thimphu’s upper slopes, is a unique sanctuary for Bhutan’s national animal. This peaceful enclave allows rare creatures to roam freely in their natural habitat. For Ziibba Travel guests, it offers a gentle, immersive encounter with a beast that appears to have stepped directly from the pages of Himalayan mythology.

Story & Significance

Legend says that in the 15th century, Drukpa Kunley, the 'Divine Madman,' created the Takin by placing a goat’s head on a cow’s skeleton. This taxonomic curiosity became a symbol of Bhutan’s conservation ethic, established after the Fourth King decided that keeping animals in cages was inconsistent with the kingdom’s spiritual values.
