Overview

The most beautiful dzong in Bhutan, Punakha Dzong, stands at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Its white-washed walls and intricate gold, red, and black wood accents contrast with turquoise waters and spring jacarandas. As the former capital, it remains the winter residence of the monastic body and a vital cultural symbol.

Story & Significance

Built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, Punakha Dzong stands majestically at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.
