Overview

Overlooking Phobjikha Valley—the famed winter home of black-necked cranes—Gangtey Goenpa is a vital Nyingma Buddhist sanctuary. This magnificent site features exquisite restored timberwork and a central tower, providing guests with profound tranquility. For our discerning travelers, it offers a serene entry into the high plateaus and the deep spiritual mysteries of this 'Hidden Land'.

Story & Significance

Pema Lingpa famously prophesied this site's importance. His grandson, Gyelse Pema Thinley, founded the original 1613 structure, which later grew into today's complex. As the heart of Peling traditions, the monastery survived centuries of isolation. A massive restoration involving 300 artisans conclude in 2008, preserving every mural and beam to honor the 'Great Treasure Revealer' legacy.
