Story & Significance
Trongsa’s 16th-century origins began in 1543 when Yongzin Lama Ngagi Wangchuk founded the site and named it Trongsa. In 1648, construction of the current fortress was initiated by Lama Chogyal Minjur Tempa, who was appointed as the first Trongsa Penlop by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel. As the ancestral home of the Wangchuck dynasty, the dzong remains a vital lynchpin of Bhutan’s royal history.
