Overview

Situated in the spiritual Bumthang valley, Kurjey Lhakhang is a premier sacred site housing the body imprint of Guru Rinpoche. Three magnificent temples commemorate the miraculous dawn of Bhutanese Buddhism. Premium travelers will find a grounding sanctuary here, set against ancient cypress trees and sweeping valley views.

Story & Significance

Kurjey marks the arrival of Buddhism in Bhutan. In the 8th century, King Sindhu Raja fell ill from a demon, prompting Guru Rinpoche’s visit to heal him. The Guru meditated in a cave, leaving a physical body imprint in the rock to signify his victory. This sacred site evolved over generations: the first temple rose in 1652, the second was built in 1900 by the first King, and the third was added in 1990 by the Queen Mother, forming a royal legacy of faith.
