Jakar Dzong
Overview
Perched on a high ridge above Jakar town, this fortress is one of Bhutan’s most dramatic sights. The 'Fortress of the White Bird' serves as Bumthang’s ancient heart, its massive white walls housing both civic and monastic life. Story & Significance
Jakar translates to 'White Bird,' honoring its mystical dawn. In 1549, searchers saw a white bird—a deity’s manifestation—on the ridge, signaling where Ngagi Wangchuck should build his monastery. Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal expanded this fortress in the 17th century to repel invaders. Ultimately, it became the strategic cradle for the Wangchuck family’s ascension in the East.
